OncoImmuno Internship/Co-op Program Overview:
The OncoImmuno summer Internship/Co-op Program at Johnson & Johnson is a comprehensive learning and professional experience at one of the world’s leading healthcare companies. This program is designed to build a future pool of talent/ candidates with diverse backgrounds who may pursue and apply for other opportunities at Johnson & Johnson ( https://www.careers.jnj.com/students) upon successfully completing their degree program. This role is a co-op position and a full-time opportunity expecting to last 6 months (starting May 12).
The position will be located in La Jolla, California. We work on a “hybrid model” if you are NOT lab based. This means that you will be asked to report on site 3 times a week and can work remotely 2 times a week. If you are selected for a co-op position, you will work directly with your manager as your start date approaches to confirm your exact schedule.
Job Description

As a summer co-op in the Onco Immuno Translational Science & Medicine (TSM) Co-op Scientist role, you will be a member of a team dedicated to the research and development of new therapeutics and precision medicine strategies in various disease states in immunology. The selected candidates will be assigned a mentor and will get an opportunity to work with the immunology teams.
Each co-op will have their own project developed jointly with their mentor and will be expected to present the results of their work to their project teams, the Immunology Senior Leadership Team (SLT), and as a poster/abstract at the research symposium.
Johnson & Johnson Immunology has a history of bringing life-changing therapies to patients with immune-mediated diseases. Translational Sciences and Medicine (TSM) is a coordinated group of scientists composed of a clinical Translational Medicine (TM) team which conducts early clinical development and experimental medicine studies, and a Translational Sciences (TS) team which uses human based data and tissues to support the end-to-end portfolio. Together, the TSM group will provide the key findings/insights on the next wave of novel therapies for these patients. Organizationally, TSM serves as a pivotal link between Discovery Research and the later phase Clinical Development group. TSM provides the vital scientific and clinical expertise to advance an industry-leading pipeline of novel mechanism small molecules and biologic agents to address unmet need in immune-mediated diseases.
This co-op position will reside within the ImmunoDermatology group in Immunology Translational Sciences department and requires a highly motivated candidate to assist in the assay development to support generation of translational data package for portfolio assets in Johnson & Johnson. The proposed work will involve the usages of human-based tissue/body fluids to measure target activations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Contribute to biomarker translational strategic planning by researching and understanding relevant target/disease biology
- Analyze human derived samples using various molecular biology lab methods, such as immunoassays, qPCR, Nanostring to generate proteomic and transcriptomic data with supervision
- Isolate RNA, DNA, and cells from human tissues
- Participating in department, team meetings and cross-functional team meetings.
- Shadowing senior research personnel on experiments
- Review of literature and related new technologies.
- Abstract/ poster preparation and presentation at organization-wide research symposium.
- Other projects as assigned
Qualifications
Required
- Legally/permanently authorized to work in the US with no required sponsorships
- Must be currently enrolled in an accredited University or College program throughout the duration of the internship.
- Undergraduate college students with completion of a minimum of four semesters and with some lab experience
- Student in good standing, working towards the completion of an undergraduate degree
- Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 which is reflective of all college coursework
- Must have experience or pursuing a degree in biology, cell/molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology/immuno-oncology, or similar areas of study
- Self-motivated, future scientist leaders passionate about drug development and clinical research
- Proven leadership/participation with campus programs and/or service programs is desired
- Detailed oriented with good organizational skills
- Possess strong leadership skills to participate and contribute to program initiatives and events
- Fluent in written and spoken English
- Great interpersonal, verbal, written communication and presentation skills
- Good presentation skills; leading presentations to peers, project teams and senior leadership teams
- Enthusiastic, collaborative, able to build relationships and work within global matrixed and cross-functional teams
- Ability to work on and balance multiple project deliverables
- Working knowledge and/or experience using Microsoft suite of business tools including but not limited to Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint, Word, Teams, Slack, Sharepoint, OneNote, Etc.
- Commitment for 6 months of internship
Preferred:
- 6 months of hands-on experience in a life science laboratory (molecular biology, cell biology, immunology or similar)
