2025 Summer Intern (6 months) - Product Development Data Sciences
Department Summary
Product Development Data Sciences is a group of more than 1,000 data scientists across 5 global sites. We deliver data and insights about our medicine with excellence and passion. Our mission is to unlock the full potential of data, to accelerate innovative healthcare solutions for patients and society.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on site.
Key Responsibilities
- Data analytics: Developing code for processing or exploration of patient level clinical data, potentially aggregating with digital health (device) and/or genomic data
- Data engineering: Exploring efficiencies in data flow from raw to analysis-ready data sets
- Developing R packages: Developing or refactoring code to create reusable R packages for data processing or visualization
- Automation: Developing innovative solutions for automating data handling and analytics processes
- Statistical research: Applied problems with direct relevance to ongoing clinical or nonclinical drug development in diverse therapeutic areas such as oncology, immunology, infectious disease, ophthalmology, and neuroscience. The specific topics may cover research problems from translational research to late-stage clinical trials and post-marketing evaluations
- Machine learning research: Suggesting and implementing new methodologies in machine learning for data exploration to enable scientific reverse translation
- Innovation: Driving proof of concept work to explore usage of new software or programming language in a component of our work
Program Highlights
- 6 months paid internship, first 12 weeks must be full time (40 hours/week) onsite, while the rest can be either full time or part time, remote or onsite, with the opportunity to extend to up to 12 months.
- Program start date is in May/June 2025.
- A stipend will be provided to selected interns to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
- Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.
- Work with some of the most talented people in the pharmaceutical biotechnology industry.
- Final presentations of project work to senior leaders.
- Lead or participate in intern committees to design and coordinate program events and initiatives.
- Professional & personal development curriculum throughout the program, including networking opportunities, workshops, and panel discussions.
- Participate in volunteer projects, social events, and team-building activities.
Who You Are
Required education
You meet one of the following criteria:
- Must be pursuing a Master's Degree or a PhD (enrolled student).
- Must have attained a Master's Degree or a PhD (no more than a year ago).
Required majors: Statistics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Biotechnology, or related fields.
Required Skills: R, statistical analysis.
Preferred knowledge, skills, and experience
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

- Solid training in statistics and/or data science.
- Expert problem solver capable of seeking help when needed.
- Excellent communicator and team player; comfortable explaining complex technical topics to non-technical audiences.
- Intermediate programming ability in R; familiarity with R Shiny a plus.
- Experience with software development workflow including versioning and code collaboration with Git.
- Passion for learning and curious about drug development in the biotech industry.
- Familiarity with time-to-event and clinical data is a plus.
Relocation benefits are not available for this position.
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position in California is $50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
